Abstract

It is referred to forest fire precaution and confrontation through the perennial experience of the author, who has collected all of his sources and knowledge in this book about firefighting. The book is preamble by Professor Dimitris Papanikolaou.

 Foreword

Every book is distinguished by two basic factors, the author and the readers to whom it is referred. The connection between these two factors can be categorized according to the attributes and the attachments they may have, while the writing and the edition of the book also involves tendentiousness. The book “Forest Fire Precaution and Confrontation” is written by Nikos Sachinidis, who projects in this the biggest part of his life, which concerns forest fires. As I have confirmed during the time we met in 2000 – 2002, when I was General Secretary of Civil Protection, his passion for voluntarism had become a way to live and act. His knowledge on the subject has been collected through many years including his involvement in voluntary firefighting organizations in Greece and abroad. Especially, his essentially exclusive occupation for a decade now with the E. S. E. P. A voluntary organization, of which he is the Chief, offered him the capability to digest into different aspects of forest fires and to seek answers from experts and experienced administrators on such issues, in theory and in action. The book is written from the angle of a person, who without being specialized, is interested to help trying to be familiar with how he is supposed to act in any case and why. Essentially it is that angle which distinguishes the forest fire fighting volunteers, to whom this book is referred. Considering the fact that N. Sachinidis teaches a lot of hours to volunteers in every firefighting period at the training center of E. S. E. P. A. in Rizomata of Imathia and at the many departments all over Greece, he is able to have an opinion of the teacher – student relationship for himself. Nevertheless, the free will and choice of every citizen to become a volunteer, regardless of age, education, occupation etc. leads to a more extended group of readers, not necessarily aimed. The only aim is the appreciation of voluntarism as a value, for which it worths someone to dedicate part of his or her time and action, in return for the feeling of human offering and social togetherness. If the whole voluntary activity leads also to a functional contribution in a fire incident, then comes the satisfaction that “we saved the forest”. It is certain though that voluntary offering in fire precaution gives the satisfaction of participation in enhancing the environment, which is visible through the action area.

In conclusion, N. Sachinidis’s book “Forest Fire Precaution and Confrontation” from one point of view fills an important gap in editions, which refer to voluntarism in Greece and from the other helps volunteers, but also every citizen, to contribute in saving forests and enhancing the environment, through knowledge, which consists an assumption for effective assistance. The success of this operation comes down to one and only basic ingredient, the love for the forests, for the environment, for the human.
